How do I add items to my inventory?
Tap the + button on your Kitchen screen and pick the way that suits what you just bought: browse the food catalogue aisle by aisle, scan a product barcode, import a grocery receipt, scan a nutrition label, or take a photo and let our AI identify what's in it. You can also simply ask the kitchen assistant — tell it "add spinach" and it will sort out the details with you. Whichever route you take, the food is matched to a USDA FoodData Central entry, so its nutrition and portion sizes are real data rather than a guess. All of them finish on the same screen, where you set the quantity, where it's stored, and its expiration date.
How does the AI recipe generator work?
Our AI analyzes the ingredients in your inventory and generates personalized recipes that use what you already have. It considers your dietary preferences, available kitchen equipment, and can prioritize items that are expiring soon. To get started, open the Recipes tab and tap the + button: you'll be offered a short set of choices — cuisine, category, meal type, cook time, and how adventurous you'd like us to be. Set them or leave them as they are, then tap "Generate recipe".
Why am I getting expiration notifications?
ChefSpaice sends you notifications when food items are approaching their expiration date, helping you use them before they go bad. Under Notifications in Settings you can change how much notice you get — anything from 1 to 30 days ahead, 3 days by default — or turn the alerts off entirely.
How do I scan barcodes?
From your Kitchen screen, tap the + button, open the "Groceries" group, and choose "Scan product barcode". Point your camera at the product's barcode and hold steady. The app will automatically detect the barcode and look up the product information. Make sure you've granted camera permissions when prompted.
Can I use the app offline?
Mostly, yes. Your kitchen inventory is stored on your device, so with no connection you can still browse it, adjust quantities, mark items as used or wasted, and delete them. Adding a new item does need a connection, because we look every food up in the USDA FoodData Central database for its nutrition and portion sizes, whether you search for it by name or scan its barcode. Features powered by AI, like recipe generation and the kitchen assistant, need a connection too. Anything you change while offline is saved on your device and sent to your account the next time the app is open with a connection, usually as soon as you switch back to it.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can manage or cancel your subscription in your device Settings. Open the Settings app, tap your name (Apple Account) at the top, tap Subscriptions, then select ChefSpaice. You'll continue to have access until the end of your current billing period.
How do I delete my account?
To delete your account and all associated data, open the menu, tap Settings, and look in the privacy and data section for "Delete Account". You'll be asked to confirm this action. Once deleted, your data cannot be recovered.
Make sure you have good lighting and hold your phone steady. If the code reads fine but the product still isn't found, that is almost always a gap in the food data rather than anything you did — the USDA's branded catalogue doesn't cover every store brand or regional product. We check a second source (Open Food Facts) automatically when that happens. If it comes up empty too, search for the product by brand or name in the same screen, browse for it by aisle instead, or ask the kitchen assistant to add it by name. If something you buy regularly is missing, email us and we'll look into it.
Open the Settings app on your device, scroll down to ChefSpaice, and switch Camera on. You may need to restart the app after granting the permission.
Ensure you have an active internet connection. Sending happens when the app comes back to the foreground, so switching away to another app and back is usually enough to start it. If some changes still won't go through, open the menu, tap Settings, and find the privacy and data section: whenever anything has failed to sync, a "Changes that didn't sync" card appears there with a Retry now button. That card is hidden when there's nothing waiting, so not seeing it means nothing is stuck.
Recipe generation requires an internet connection and at least 3 items in your inventory. Check your connection and make sure you have ingredients added to your pantry.
